In January, Mike WiLL Made-It declared that Rae Sremmurd’s Sremmlife 3 will come in the form of three separate albums while on the Grammys red carpet. The dynamic duo will release a separate record of their own in addition to their third joint studio album. While both Swae Lee and Slim Jxmmi lend guest spots on numerous hits, they haven’t released projects as individual artists until now — each dropping a single of their own, as well as one as Rae Sremmurd.
The lively group calls upon Juicy J for “Powerglide,” which checks all the boxes for their hit formula. Swae lays a melodic hook over a Mike WiLL beat, while Jxmmi’s raspy bars completes the Yin-Yang balance.
Swae’s “Hurt to Look” is a mellow pop record decorated in sounds redolent of a beach, wind chimes, all the bells and whistles (literally.) The rising star looks towards the sun on the cover art, dressed in a pink bathrobe standing in front of a dark-green tropical foliage.
Jxmmi’s “Brxnks Trunk” is just the opposite. “Keep a few racks on me, I used to work in a factory,” Jxmmi spits over dark, industrial sounds. The Quentin Tarantino-esque cover, reminiscent of Pulp Fiction, makes it clear that the energetic rapper isn’t here to sing.
As Rae Sremmurd experiences meteoric success as a group, their solo works hold just as much promise. If the brothers part entirely, they would be able to dominate two different realms of popular music. Nevertheless, Sremmlife 3 will sure to keep radio waves ablaze.
